Three young women, all seen hitchhiking, all disappeared. Two of these unsolved disappearances are the oldest cold cases in their respective states. Paula Welden, a resident of Stamford, Connecticut and student at Bennington College in Vermont disappeared in 1946 after hitching a ride to walk a portion of the Long Trail. Her disappearance sparked the largest search in Vermont's history. She was never found. Two states away, Connie Smith of Wyoming left a Lakeville, Connecticut summer camp in 1952 and was seen trying to catch a ride to the village center...and then she was gone. A nationwide search resulted in hundreds of leads but not one clue as to what happened to her. But there was a case a few years earlier relating to another missing young woman...the details of which lay buried for many years. Katherine Hull was visiting her grandmother in Lebanon Springs, New York, went for a walk and was seen hitchhiking. She was never again seen alive. Seven years passed before a group of hunters came face-to-face with her skull off a lonely road outside Pittsfield, Massachusetts. With 21st century eyes, Michael Dooling takes a fresh look at these three cases and puts them in context of modern psychological and geographic profiling. Using knowledge gained from the only case in which any remains were found, he sheds new light on what might have happened to the other two young women.

I'm thinking about hiking the VT Long Trail next summer so I started doing some research and found this book. The premise seemed intriguing. However, it just rehashes people lost near the Long Trail over a 5 or 10 year period 70+ years ago. Meh...

A very interesting read about some forgotten missing persons cases. Although I don't believe Dooling's theory that these disappearances\deaths were caused by a single serial killer, his theory was plausible and well-presented. The included maps could have been a bit larger but, other than that, it was a good book.
Very interesting retelling of the three old disappearances in New England. Very impressive details considering all the time that has passed. Evidently kidnapper/killers have always been around although I think modern electronics have made their job easier. But being in the wrong place at the wrong time could always be fatal. Learn from this in a fit of anger or sadness do not go walking down a road alone. You never know who is driving by.
Great read. Local history that I heard a little about growing in Bennington. Had heard of the Bennington Triangle but never knew what it encompassed.
I couldn't get my nose out of this book and found each case very interesting. I wish Michael would consider writing a second book about other unsolved cases in the New England Area.
Paula Welden was in a book about missing people that I read as a child and I always felt so bad for her and her family. I didn't know the other two in this book but it elicited the same feelings for them. I'll probably read it again someday.
This is a very interesting book. It explains how 3 separate disappearances of young girls hitchhiking in New England could very well have been the work of the same killer, even though there were several years' lapse between each case.
I read alot of unsolved mystery books and this by far is the best. The vintage crimes are especially interesting because you're not likely to have read about them before in other books. Looking forward to more by this author!!!
