A mystery that can never be solved is truly a mystery. This is the case of TV's Superman, George Reeves. Found dead in his Benedict Canyon home in 1959, stories have circulated for decades on what took down the Man of Steel. George Reeves, the human being, was not the Man of Steel. "Crypt 39, Coroner's Case 45426 George Reeves" is a fictional first person account of the last decade of this TV icon's life.
Crypt 39 Coroner Case 45426 George Reeves edition by Jan Alan Henderson Literature Fiction eBooks
Crypt 39: Coroner’s Case 45426 is author Jan Alan Henderson’s metafictional account of the life and death of actor George Reeves, better known to the world as- SUPERMAN.All of Henderson’s writings prior to Crypt 39 have been non-fiction. (Speeding Bullet: The Life and Bizarre Death of George Reeves, The Legendary Lydecker Brothers, Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, Behind the Crimson Cape: The Cinema of George Reeves) This is his first novel.
In his Foreword Jan writes, “Finally, I must stress this volume is a work of fiction for entertainment purposes, not a biography. …It’s told from Reeves point of view while he comes to terms with his own demise, and relives his last decade on planet Earth. …What I hope to convey is what he experienced during the last ten years of his life; the ups, downs, good times, hard times, dreams and aspirations. “
Like his predecessor, screenwriter, Joe Gilles (played by William Holden) in the classic film, Sunset Boulevard (1950) Reeves begins the telling of his life from his death, where we discover he is cooling his heels in the deep freeze in Crypt 39 at the mortuary.
What I liked most about Henderson’s novel is the fact that it was written by an author whose life has been steeped in decades of personal factual research and biographical writings on George Reeves, as Superman. All of that knowledge becomes the background for a fictional retelling of his life, but obviously “based in fact.”
In the end, we are presented with not a superman, not a “Man of Steel” but rather, a man made of softer metal. A Man of Copper. Henderson through his use of metafiction, introduces us to something much more akin to the real George Reeves, the man behind the myth. The real man, possessed of vice and virtue, strength and weakness.
Crypt 39, is a quick and enjoyable read and an honest tug on Superman’s cape. Check it out.

Crypt 39 Coroner Case 45426 George Reeves edition by Jan Alan Henderson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
good book.
This story by Jan Alan Henderson is the single most significant telling of the George Reeves case. While it is a fictional story it achieves on the basis of making sense of how close as possible the chain of events could have happened. Jan stay close to the known truths, never wondering into mythical proportions that so many other writers have trapped themselves into by not having the longevity in knowing the dynamics of the case and had to rely on other source material filled with regurgitated misconceptions. Mr. Henderson, who has that longevity respectfully places us into the mind of George Reeves and shows the way of how these individuals behaved in everyday, normal ways. Jan Alan Henderson is the most qualified individual to take us through the George Reeves story and with "Crypt 39 Coroner's Case 45426 George Reeves" he succeeds in a way no one has ever been capable of doing. It's as unique as any brilliant story skillfully told and brings the mystery to a closure as one can possibly bring to the forefront. I found the read very intelligent, concise and most important he doesn't insult the reader with liberties taken because he didn't know what he was doing. I could see this being turned into a 2 or 3 part made for television mini-series, if the right film Producer came along. It has everything a film needs. Louis Koza 01/30/2016
Jan Alan Henderson's new novel, "Crypt 39", is a must read for fans of George Reeves. It is a mystery novel written from Reeves' viewpoint after the tragic events of June 16, 1959. The Reeves case remains controversial to this day and this novel lays out what could have happened back in that day. There are some surprises along the way. Very well written. Mr. Henderson is also the author of several other books, including "Speeding Bullet."
Story has intrigue. Captivating. Holds your interest. Full of energy. Words resonate from the page. Jan Henderson did his research on this book. He knows the subject well from his other works on this subject. Much history of Hollywood is included in this work. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in Hollywood. You make a decision on your own how George Reeves died.
For me, this book turned out to be not what I thought it would be. It turned out to be a piece of fiction that basically incorporated the "same old/same old" facts that we all knew existed. Mr. Henderson's prior books on George Reeves were all excellent. There were no photos on George Reeves other than a faded head shot of George on the back of the book. While I know that I will purchase any future books that Mr. Henderson may put out in the future, I should have read the small print when I purchased this particular book.
Jan Henderson has invented a time-machine... his novel, Crypt 39, takes the reader not only back in time, but into the mind of George Reeves as his life travels to his fateful and famous demise. The book recreates both the business and city of 1950s Hollywood and we see both through the eyes of George Reeves as he comes to grips with the blessing and curse of portraying "Superman."
While no one really knows what happened that often studied day, Mr. Henderson - probably the foremost authority on the mystery of George Reeves - spins a plausible and intriguing tale. Is it the truth? No one can say, but in Mr. Henderson's skillful hands, it seems amazingly authentic.
This is a fantastic book. I really enjoyed how he wrote this book as a novel filled with so much infromation that I've read about before. The children of the 50's are now in their 70's. I'm in that catagory. I seen a lot of George's films besides his superman role and he was the complete actor. What could of been. I wasn't aware of his possibility of going over to Europe after Superman. I think he would of made it big over there. That's the time when Steve Reeves started his film career with Hercules and later Clint Eastwood in his spagetti Westerns. The possibilities fro Geroge would of been endless One last thing I know the ending of this was only fiction but I could of seen it happen. A must read for all George Reeves fans.
